Background of the Study
Student resource preferences play a crucial role in shaping library services and resource allocation. At Sule Lamido University, the dichotomy between traditional print resources and modern e‑resources is increasingly significant as technological advancements and changing learning habits impact user choices (Umar, 2023). While e‑resources offer instant access and convenience, print materials are often favored for their tangibility and ease of note‑taking. This study investigates the factors that drive student preferences, exploring aspects such as accessibility, cost, ease of use, and learning efficacy. Changes in reading habits, digital literacy, and the integration of online platforms have altered the landscape of academic resource consumption (Ibrahim, 2024). Through surveys and focus group discussions, the research aims to understand the underlying motivations for resource choice and how these preferences affect overall learning outcomes. The study’s findings are anticipated to inform library resource development strategies, ensuring that resource investments align with student needs and future academic trends (Nasir, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of a wide range of both print and e‑resources at Sule Lamido University, there is uncertainty about which medium students prefer for academic study. While e‑resources are accessible and convenient, many students exhibit a strong inclination towards print materials, citing reasons related to ease of comprehension and reduced screen fatigue (Umar, 2023). This disparity in preferences can lead to inefficient resource utilization and challenges in managing library collections. The study aims to pinpoint the critical factors influencing these choices, assess the impact on academic performance, and propose evidence‑based recommendations for balanced resource provisioning (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess student preferences for print and e‑resources.
To identify factors influencing resource choice.
To recommend strategies for balanced resource investment.
Research Questions:
What is the predominant preference among students?
What factors influence the choice between print and e‑resources?
How can libraries better align resource offerings with student preferences?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the determinants behind student resource preferences, providing a basis for enhancing library collections and service delivery. The results will help library administrators optimize resource investments and better support academic success through tailored resource provisioning (Nasir, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses exclusively on student preferences for print vs. e‑resources at Sule Lamido University and does not encompass faculty or administrative views.
Definitions of Terms:
Print Resources: Physical books, journals, and other paper‑based materials.
E‑resources: Digital materials, including e‑books and online journals.
User Preference: The choice or inclination of users towards a particular resource format.
